Front Door, Echomail and Netmail where processed by many bulletin board systems, that had these areas and services. Nightly events would run causing a mail tosser program to gather all out going echomail or netmail process it into a packet and place it in a directory under a front door called usually outbound. During the nightly event systems would dial to their hubs and all out going echomail and netmail was sent outbound through the front door programs. During the same call any inbound mail was sent to the bulletin board system and processed to the system with the mail tosser into the appropriate message areas. To simply explain a front door, it was basically another form of a bulletin board system, however it's only purpose was to accept all calls check to see if it was a hub/node or a actual human caller. If it was a hub/node it would process mail by sending or recieving mail, if it was a human caller it would pass them off to the bulletin board system through the use of enviromental variables. Not all bulletin board systems used front doors, on some bbs systems it came as a built in feature. |
