Qwk Mail,

Orginally it was a Bulletin Board System with local message areas, as time went on and the hobby grew into echo message areas that where created between various systems.

With the creation of echo message areas the mesage bases on many bulletin board systems grew, this created a problem for the users if they had a interest in many areas with the time constraints of being online a system.

Many systems had time limits per call, some offered time banks where users could store minutes not used for a later dial into the system.

Users having interests in many message areas both local and echomail, eventually a format was created allowing the user to download selected message areas into a packet and archived into their favorite compression program for reading and responding to offline.

Qwk was the major format used, the user would download the selected areas of interest and read the messages offline and it even provided the means for the user to respond offline and upload the messages back to the bulletin board system.

This was a very proficient and widely used system, some bulletin board system incorporated into the bbs itself while others used popular door programs like Bluewave to provide to their users.

It solved many issues, like online time constraints for the user to do other things online like playing games, file downloads and yet keep up on their favorite message areas.
